Our School
Ethos
Scoil Mhuire Junior School is a girls only school which aims to recognise and promote the potential in each girl. We help each student develop academically and socially. We foster a love for education and learning while also recognising the important and individual contribution each student makes to the world. We nurture strong, healthy and enduring relationships and focus on developing happy, independent children. Kindness, empathy and inclusion are central to our teaching ethos.
As a Catholic school, we encompass Catholic ethos and social teaching into our curriculum. Religious understanding is achieved through our participation in liturgy, preparation for the Sacraments and prayer. We welcome and respect all denominations and nurture an appreciation of other faiths and traditions. We prepare our pupils for the diversified world in which they live, whilst always encouraging integrity, inclusiveness and respect.

Staff work tirelessly to create a familial and stimulating learning environment. Our small class sizes mean more time is spent exploring each pupil’s unique attributes. We work to develop their strengths and encourage students to excel. Our students graduate Scoil Mhuire Junior School confident, caring individuals, intent on making a difference.
Scoil Mhuire Junior School also encourages sporting and social development with specialist teachers in Hockey, Basketball, Drama, Music, Italian, French and Latin. We aim to help our students develop in every way – morally, spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, intellectually and artistically.
History
Scoil Mhuire Junior School opened in 1954, as a feeder to the already established Scoil Mhuire Senior School and was founded by the late Miss Katherine M. Cahill, M.A., Miss O’Donovan, M.A and Miss Joan O’Donovan, M.A (who later joined the Dominican Order). 1954 saw the closure of nearby Scoil Ite, an historic school founded in 1916 by Misses Mary and Annie MacSwiney, sisters of playwright, author and War of Independence hunger striker, Terence MacSwiney. By the wishes of Miss Annie, the surviving sister, on her retirement, the teachers and most of the pupils transferred to Scoil Mhuire. Scoil Mhuire became an all-age school from Junior Infants upwards. The primary school remains in the original school building and continues to be funded entirely by pupils’ fees.
